Research on E cigarettes examining health effects Safety evaluation and risk assessment

Smoking is one of the most lethal addictions of the time. It is a hard habit to break! We have all tried to quit the smoking infinite number of times without any success. Well, it’s partially not our fault as tobacco contains nicotine which is highly addictive.
Before we begin, let us clear this, there is no such thing as a safe cigarette, so let’s not fool ourselves into believing such things. Light Cigarette, Menthol Cigarette are just new names created by the tobacco industries to make us feel insured while we smoke our lungs away.
What is E Cigarette
Smoking E-cigarette or vaping uses an electronic device that creates aerosol by heating a liquid (e-liquid) which a user inhales. The liquid is mostly made of nicotine, glycol, glycerin and flavouring agents. There is no combustion in e-cigarettes.
Smokers take up vaping to leave their addiction of smoking. E-cigarettes are no doubt less harmful than our traditional cigarettes as the nicotine percentage in them are very less in comparison, though long-term effects of vaping are still uncertain yet.
E-cigarettes are a viable method of quitting smoking; they are 60% more effective than nicotine patches and gums. E-cigarettes are effective because it gives out the same sensation as smoking a cigarette. The vapour produced contains nicotine but not tobacco which reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms such as depression and irritation.
Flavors of E Cigarettes
There are plenty of flavors available for e-cigarettes. From regular to fruits, to spicy, to chocolaty and to hive, there are numerous ones. Let’s see what all flavors are readily available in market apart from Regular one, here we go-
# Lime & Coconut
# What A Melon
# The Tangy Mango
# Fudge Brownie
# Blazing Forest
# Cotton Candy
# Peanut Butter
# Dragon Fruit
# Tutti Fruity
According to a study published in the journal Tobacco Control, reveals that high exposure levels of flavored chemicals used as flavoring agents in e-cigarettes could spur respiratory irritation. The chemicals are the same flavors which are often added to foods, so the FDA has determined them to be generally recognized as safe in food.
But, the experts say that these chemicals may be more dangerous when inhaled than when they are ingested in food. They found that some of the common flavor chemicals used are benzaldehyde and vanillin, which are known to be respiratory irritants and have exposure limits for the workplace.
When a team of researchersworked and estimated consumption rates of both cigarette and e-cigarette, they concluded that an e-cigarette liquid consumption rate of about 5 ml per day puts users at an exposure of twice the recommended occupational limits. "That's probably not a good thing.”
Are E Cigarettes Harmful
E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than our traditional cigarettes. They are great if used to quit smoking and studies proved that they are more effective than nicotine patches and other products.
But if used by non-smokers there is a high chance that they’ll get addicted to nicotine.
Some scientists claim that when e-cigarettes are vaped at high temperature they release formaldehyde which is a cancerous element. Though there is no solid ground to all these claims.
Studies held recently in California states that e-cigarette restricts lung functions, causes respiratory irritation and increase chances of asthma. These new findings are circumscribed and plenty of unfolding is still left.
The debate over e-cigarette is endless and a bit frustrating exercise with no end conclusion.
Smoking And Its Consequences
Smoking has adverse effects on our body; it nearly affects every organ in the body. Let us know you some more effects-
# Smoking reduces our bone density making it prone to easy fractures and low bone mass.
# Every cigarette that you smoke scars your lungs. It destroys lung tissues, air sacks making it harder to breathe.
# You are more likely to have heart attacks from smoking rather than high blood pressure! Yes, it is proven nicotine deteriorates your heart walls and block the arteries hindering blood circulation.
# Not many of us know this but the smoke from cigarettes butcher our optic nerves as well which can lead to blindness.
# Also, smoking is the number one cause of cancer.
So the bottom line here is
E-cigarettes are better than your conventional cigarettes
But are absolutely worse than no smoking at all.
The long-term effects of e-cigarette on health are uncertain.
And if you’re a chronic smoker e-cigarette can be the cure you’re looking for.
This is What Experts Say
Tobacco Control — "Levels of selected carcinogens and toxicants in vapour from electronic cigarettes": Researchers compared the levels of toxicants and carcinogens in e-cigarette vapor with tobacco cigarettes. They found they were nine to 450 times less prevalent than in conventional cigarette smoke.
Chris Bullen - an e-cigarette researcher and professor at the University of Auckland's school of public health, noted that newer electronic cigarettes use a heating control mechanism that prevents "cooking" the e-liquid, and reduces the risk of generating harmful aldehydes. He cautioned about drawing conclusions from older studies that may be based on out-of-date technology. But he also added that there's a lot of inconsistency in manufacturing quality: "Backyard operators" who make e-cigs may run the risk of contamination.
